Key Trends in Residential Doors and Windows

Key trends in residential doors include a shift toward minimalist, clean-lined designs, with a significant increase in glass and natural light for both interior and exterior applications. Other significant trends are bold statement colors, particularly black, and smart home integration.

For interior doors, popular styles include sleek flat panels, space-saving barn and pocket doors, and warm, natural wood finishes. Energy-efficient materials and eco-friendly designs are also a growing priority for exteriors.

Aesthetic & Design Trends

  • Minimalism: Clean lines, simple shapes, and subtle hardware are prominent in modern and minimalist door designs.

  • Glass & Natural Light: The use of glass panels and transoms in both interior and exterior doors is a major trend to maximize natural light.

  • Statement Doors: Bold colors, such as black or vibrant nature-inspired tones, are used to create a welcoming and impactful entrance.

  • Arched & Rounded Doors: Arched designs are a popular choice for adding character and a unique touch to entryways.

  • Wood Finishes: Warm, natural wood finishes continue to be a popular choice, particularly for interior doors.

  • Flush Panels: Smooth, flat-panel interior doors are a key feature for modern homes, emphasizing a sleek and simple aesthetic.

  • Modern Farmhouse: This style continues to evolve, incorporating elements like flush wood panels and grid French doors.

Key trends in residential windows include a strong focus on energy efficiency via triple-glazing and low-E coatings, minimalist and modern designs with large sizes, black frames, and frameless appearances, and growing interest in smart window technology for automation and climate control. Homeowners also desire a greater indoor-outdoor connection through large or corner windows and prefer sustainable materials like vinyl and composites, while also valuing customization in size and color.

Style & Design

  • Large and panoramic windows: To maximize natural light and create seamless indoor-outdoor views, homeowners are embracing larger windows, including floor-to-ceiling and corner designs.

  • Minimalist aesthetics: A modern trend emphasizes simplicity with slim, frameless designs and minimal window grids to achieve an unobstructed view.

  • Bold and dark frames: Black and dark-colored window frames are trending, especially paired with neutral-colored walls and finishes, to create a sleek, contemporary look.

  • Customizable options: Increased demand for customization includes adding color, choosing various finishes, and selecting different window types like casement or tilt-and-turn to suit individual needs.

Doors & Windows FAQs

Residential Doors FAQs

What are the standard residential doors must have? The height for all passage doors must be a minimum of 80 inches and the standard width sizes for interior doors are 24”, 28”, 30”, 32” and 36”. The minimum recommended door width to allow persons with disabilities' to pass through is 36 inches.

What are the rules for doors? Thermal Insulation: Doors must have adequate insulation to prevent heat loss, contributing to energy conservation in the building. U-Values: The U-value of a door indicates its effectiveness as an insulator. Lower U-values are preferable, as they signify less energy loss.

What are the requirements for an exterior door? Standard entry door measurements: Height: 80 inches (6 feet 8 inches) Thickness: 1 3/4 inches. Width: 36 inches standard (30 and 32inches also available)

Do you have to replace the door frame when replacing the door? No, you do not always have to replace the door frame when replacing a door; you can replace a door slab into an existing, good-condition frame, but if the frame is damaged, misaligned, or if you have a pre-hung door, you'll likely need to replace the entire unit. To determine the best approach, first assess the frame's condition and then measure the opening to find a door slab of the exact same dimensions, ensuring a proper fit for the existing frame

Windows FAQs

What questions to ask about windows? Top Ten Questions 1: Do you have a showroom? 2: Can I get references? 3: What is the warranty? 4: What do I need to do? 5: Do you have insurance? 6: Who is going to measure the windows? 7: What materials do you use? 8: How long is this going to take? 9: Can you tell me about your installers? 10: Can I get detailed pricing?

How often should residential windows be replaced? House windows should be replaced when they show signs of poor performance or damage, such as drafts, condensation, or difficulty opening and closing, rather than on a fixed schedule. The lifespan of windows varies significantly by material, with vinyl windows lasting 20–40 years, wood windows 15–30 years (requiring maintenance), and fiberglass windows potentially lasting 30–50 years. Key factors influencing window longevity include the quality of the frame and glass, installation quality, and the local climate

What are the regulations for windows? Width and Height - Either of these are not to be any less than 450mm. Clear Openable Area - No less than 0.33m² Ceiling height - The bottom of the openable area should be no more than 1100mm above the floor area.

What shortens a window's lifespan? Excess moisture over time can influence the lifespan of your windows. Moisture buildup is fairly common on windows, but if it's ignored it can cause damage to the windows like mold, mildew and water damage. If your local climate produces a lot of humidity, moisture is more likely to build up on your windows
