Residential Woodworking Key Trends

Sustainability and natural materials

  • Eco-conscious materials: Demand is high for environmentally friendly options like sustainably sourced lumber, fast-growing bamboo, and reclaimed wood. Reclaimed wood, salvaged from old structures, is particularly valued for its history and unique character.

  • Natural textures and finishes: Homeowners prefer finishes that highlight the natural grain and texture of the wood rather than masking it. Trending finishes include natural oils, wax, matte, and satin options, which keep the wood looking as natural as possible while still offering protection.

  • Bringing the outdoors in: This trend incorporates natural shapes, textures, and elements into living spaces to create a stronger connection to nature. Live-edge furniture, which preserves the organic shape of the tree, is a popular example.

Design aesthetics

  • Minimalism and clean lines: A sleek, minimalist look continues to be popular, focusing on clean lines, simple shapes, and functional simplicity. Features like flat cabinet panels, subtle curves, and handle-free designs help to create an uncluttered, modern look.

  • Mixing materials and tones: Designers are combining wood with other materials like metal, glass, and concrete to create a modern, industrial, or elegantly contrasted aesthetic. For example, pairing light wood tones with dark accents or adding metal legs to a wood table.

  • Bold and unique statement pieces: To add personality, clients are commissioning bold, one-of-a-kind wooden pieces. Examples include sculptural chairs, unique shelving, and intricate wall art.

Functionality and technology

  • Smart woodworking: Technology is being integrated seamlessly into residential pieces. This includes furniture with built-in wireless charging stations, USB ports, hidden LED lighting, and touch-activated storage compartments.

  • Multi-functional and modular furniture: As living spaces shrink, there's a higher demand for furniture that maximizes utility. Popular projects include modular storage units, hidden under-stair drawers, and coffee tables with built-in storage.

  • Built-in storage solutions: Custom, built-in shelving and cabinetry offer a seamless blend of practicality and elegance for maximizing space in kitchens, offices, and bedrooms.

Woodworking & Basements FAQs

How many years does a wood basement last? Pressure treatment with preservatives like chromated copper arsenate (CCA) ensures resistance to decay and insect activity. Such treatment processes are integral in allowing wood foundations to last between five and 40 years

Woodworking FAQs

What are the rules of woodworking? Woodworking rules emphasize personal safety, machine maintenance, and a clean workshop to prevent injuries. Key practices include wearing eye and hearing protection, avoiding loose clothing and jewelry, disconnecting power for adjustments, keeping the work area tidy, securing workpieces, and using tools properly

What are some interesting facts about woodworking? * The terms “hardwood” and “softwood” don't actually refer to the wood itself! * British oak trees can live for up to 500 years. * The dovetail joint, which is used frequently now, predates much of written history, with the technique dating back to ancient Egypt. * Ebony is the darkest natural wood we know of and is dense enough to sink rather than float in water. * Some scholars believe that the Egyptians were the first to “finish” woodwork, that is, place a protective sealant on wooden objects to preserve them. * IKEA uses 1% of the world’s commercial wood every year. That’s a whopping 17.8 million cubic yards, or 13.6 million cubic metres. * Biblical Hebrew does not clearly distinguish between the words “chair”, “throne” and “stool”. The same word refers to seating both with and without a backseat, and even this tends to become clear only within context.

What is the difference between carpentry and woodworking? Carpentry focuses on the structural and functional aspects of working with wood, like building framing and installations, often on construction sites using softwoods and portable tools. Woodworking is a broader discipline encompassing the creation of finished and decorative objects, such as furniture, cabinetry, and artistic pieces, often in a workshop setting with a wider range of tools and higher quality hardwoods

What are the different types of woodworking? * Woodcarving. * Woodturning. * Wood Burning (Pyrography) * Furniture Making. * Epoxy Woodworking. * Construction. * Boxes. * Cabinetry.

Basements FAQs

Why are basements needed? Basements are often required or beneficial due to the structural necessity of digging foundations below the frost line in cold climates to prevent frost heave. They also provide crucial protection from severe weather like tornadoes, serve as a valuable space for utilities and additional living or storage areas, improve a home's value, and contribute to energy efficiency due to natural insulation

What are the three types of basements? The three main types of basements, determined by lot terrain, are * Full Basements (fully submerged) * Daylight/Lookout Basements (partially exposed with windows), and * Walkout Basements (fully exposed on at least one side with a door and often a full window), with the latter two offering more natural light and easier outdoor access

Are basements safe in a tornado? Will basements really protect you from a violent tornado? Yes, basements are generally the safest place to shelter during a tornado, but they are not guaranteed to be completely safe, especially from very strong tornadoes. Go to the most interior part of the basement, stay away from windows, and get under something sturdy like a heavy table. Also, avoid areas with large, heavy objects (like a basement refrigerator) that could fall on you if the floor above is damaged

What is a Yankee basement? A "Yankee basement" is a full-height, underground basement, common in the Northeast and parts of the Midwest, that is built by digging out the foundation, leaving a berm of earth to support the home's foundation. Unlike daylight or walk-out basements, a Yankee basement has no direct exterior door or windows on the main level, requiring access through cellar doors or an angled sidewalk hatch with steps down from ground level. These basements provide ample underground space, often used for storage, finished living areas like a "man cave," or even as a root cellar
